Gibbs has the whistle at the Den

His three previous Burnley games have come one in each of the last three seasons starting with the 2-1 win against Norwich in what was Eddie Howe's first home league game as manager. He had a shocker of a game that afternoon but was much better in the next season when he refereed our 1-0 defeat against Reading.

His most recent game was last season's 1-1 draw against Watford when he gave us a penalty so perhaps we shouldn't complain.

He became a Football League referee ahead of the 2008/09 season and his first game was Shrewsbury v Macclesfield in August 2008, a game won 4-0 by Shrewsbury. There were four goals for the home side when he got his first Championship game in January 2009, a 4-1 win for Swansea against Preston.

He still referees more frequently in the lower two divisions although tomorrow's game will be his third Championship fixture in what will be his eighth game.

In the seven games he's refereed so far this season there have been just fourteen yellow cards and one red card. The first seven of those went to away team players but that's evened out somewhat with five home players and nine away players yellow carded while Shrewsbury's Jon Taylor, playing at home for Shrewsbury against Wolves was the player sent off.

His last game was the League One clash between Bristol City and Brentford at Ashton Gate a week last Tuesday, won 2-1 by Brentford. There were no cards at all in that game.

Phil Gibbs is currently in 63rd place in RATE THE REF with a rating of 42.05 out of 100 from his three games.

The assistant referees are Carl Fitch (Suffolk) and Andrew Laver (Hampshire). The fourth official is Football League referee Mick Russell who refereed our last game of last season at home to Ipswich.
