Get the Kettle on

Last updated : 28 September 2007 By Tony Scholes
I don't know whether tomorrow's game against Crystal Palace will boil over but we'll have a Kettle out on the pitch, Berkshire referee Trevor Kettle.

The last time we saw Kettle was at the Stadium of Light at the end of last season and he did his utmost to make a complete mess of the game. Having said that, he was the only referee last season to give us a penalty, even though he did get the decision completely wrong, just as he had done with one for RK Sunderland earlier in the game.

He got quite a few televised Championship games last season and had more than one poor game. He is not the most mobile of referees and his often caught much too far away from the play.

One thing he does enjoy is handing out yellow cards, over the last few seasons he's been one of the most prolific. He's had just over three and a half seasons on the Football League list and has now taken his total of yellow cards to 535 and has also collected 41 red cards.

Games with eight, nine or ten yellow cards are not anywhere near infrequent enough for him, although in his first two Burnley games there were only two yellow cards. In that last game against RK Sunderland he yellow carded six players and all but one of them was carded for dissent after questioning his decisions.

This season he's had a reasonably quiet start with 31 yellow cards in eight games. Eleven of those have gone to home team players with the other twenty to home team players. His red card count is just two, Greg Halford was sent off in RK Sunderland's 3-0 Carling Cup exit at Luton and Southend's Garry Richards was dismissed in their 1-0 win at Oldham.

Although his first two Burnley games were more than acceptable, Trevor Kettle is not a referee I look forward to seeing. He's never too far away from a nightmare performance.

He will be assisted by Peter Grove (West Midlands) and Ross Joyce (Cleveland) and the fourth official will be Andy Newell (Lancashire).
