Get the beach balls out

Last updated : 30 October 2009 By Tony Scholes
That Sunderland goal, credited to Darren Bent, will be a 'Question of Sport' question in What Happened Next for years to come after the shot bounced off a beach ball on the six yard line leaving Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina trying to save the wrong ball.

It shouldn't have been allowed and Jones paid the penalty with a week out of the Premier League but has now had his wrist slapped and has been allowed back.

He's been a frequent visitor to the Turf over the years and refereed the first game we played following the appointment of Owen Coyle against Stoke. Last season he refereed our cup wins against Fulham and West Brom and then took charge of the last away game of the season at Southampton when he had a poor game.

Our difficult days with him have come away from home. In our first away game of the 1998/99 season his horrendous penalty decision in stoppage time gave the points to Chesterfield and two years later he turned in a horror show at Wolves.

But in the 2002/03 season he gave us one of those memorable Turf Moor moments when he sent off Craig Hignett during a 3-1 win against Coventry leaving the former Blackburn player to walk two thirds the length of the pitch to a wonderful reception from the home crowd.

This season he's refereed nine games and handed out 28 yellow cards. Of those 12 have gone to home players and 16 to away players. The last player he sent of was Blackburn's Jason Roberts in his last game of last season.

The assistant referees will be Jake Collin (Merseyside) and Paul Simpson (Co. Durham). On duty as the fourth official is Football League referee Oliver Langford (West Midlands). He is currently in his second season on the League list and has refereed just one game at Championship level.
