Geordies on the Roeder to nowhere

It is a story that has been running for weeks and weeks and finally today Freddie ‘Offshore’ Shepherd called time on Souness after almost sixteen months as manager on Tyneside during which time he had won 36 out of 83 games.

The Geordie fans will be celebrating I’m sure but do they know what they have let themselves in for with the news that The Sinister One Glenn Roeder will assume charge in a caretaker capacity, assisted by Alan Shearer.

Roeder has a wonderful CV, that includes acting as Gazza’s minder, screwing up Chris Waddle’s managerial career and taking West Ham out of the Premiership – and yet incredibly he has been let loose on a club who could just be facing a relegation battle.

The good news for the supporters up there is that he cannot be in the job for more than twelve weeks because he doesn’t have the required qualifications to manage in the Premiership, something the West Ham fans already knew, and neither does Shearer. But twelve weeks is ample time for any damage to be done.

Football appears to be in a state of chaos in that part of the country, unless you are a Darlington fan celebrating Kyle Lafferty goals. Things are not going well at Middlesbrough, Hartlepool boss Martin Scott was suspended yesterday and now this. “Souness is on his bike,” said one headline, and a Sunderland supporter politely asked if it was a tandem and whether there would be room to take Mick McCarthy with him.

Souness or Roeder – who would you choose?
