Gascoigne for Exeter

He already had confirmed opportunities in the Premiership and in various other countries around the world. Somewhat surprisingly that Gascoigne, who played his last game for the Clarets almost six months ago, has not found himself any work.

One by one the countless opportunities have disappeared and even the Americans and New Zealanders knocked him back. His agent Ian Elliott keeps convincing the media that he is waiting for the right opportunity but maybe Gazza is either finished or he needs to find himself a new agent.

When he was linked with York City during the summer Elliott said that life in Division Three would not be suitable for his client and so enquiries from massive clubs such as Darlington and Exeter were sneered at.

However, October and still out of work, and Elliott looking for his 10% the name of Paul Gascoigne has now been thrown into the ring to take over as manager of Exeter City following the sacking of John Cornforth. It is believed that Exeter are interested in talking to him, although it has to be said they are only interested at this stage.

There has been no official net comment from Exeter. For a club who has Uri Geller as co-Chairman and Michael Jackson as a director they are not very good when it comes to PR. This morning, three days after the sacking of Cornforth, their web site claims, "John Cornforth has our faith and trust."

So will it be Gazza? Can you imagine him as player/manager of a 3rd Division club? Maybe those in charge at Exeter can’t either. Co Vice-Chairman Mike Lewis (he shares the role with the spoon benders son) admitted that they would like to speak to Gazza and said, "We will ask him what coaching abilities he has and what his ambitions are, career wise. Until we have done that we can’t really say more on this issue."

However the other co-Chairman John Russell was much more realistic and said, "There are a couple of names that are better than Gascoigne."

Is this a club that can really be taken seriously?
