Game number two this season for Marriner

Last updated : 09 January 2015 By Tony Scholes

That had been his first Burnley game since 2008 and only his fourth Burnley game since becoming a league referee in 2002. He was the only Premier League official not to referee a Burnley game during the 2009/10 season.

His first Premier League game was now over a decade ago; he refereed Charlton v Norwich at The Valley which was won 4-0 by the home side.

He has a bit of a reputation for over using his cards and between March 2013 and March 2014 he sent off no fewer than 20 players, including three in a Championship match between Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley at Hillsborough.

But since the end of March last year there have only been two further red cards. He sent off Ryan Shawcross in his last game of last season and this season he dismissed Bournemouth's Yann Kermogant in a 2-1 win at Bolton.

That was a strange one; Eddie Howe hit out at Marriner after the game for the decision but the player admitted it and said his complaint was that he'd be suspended for three games when he felt the offence only warranted a one match ban.

He's refereed 16 domestic games this season with only seven of them in the Premier League. He was one of the referees named this week by Keith Hackett who should be axed for not being good enough. I don't think anyone that ever saw Hackett referee will take him seriously.

In those 16 games, Marriner has yellow carded 57 players of which 30 have been home team players and 27 away team players. In his last game, the FA Cup tie between Dover and Crystal Palace, the only player carded was Dover's Connor Essam.

Marriner is quite high in the RATE THE REF Table. He's currently in fourth place with a rating of 82/08 out of 100.

The assistant referees are Mark Perry (West Midlands) and Michael Salisbury (Lancashire). The fourth official is Lee Mason (Bolton) whose last Burnley game in the middle was the home draw against Blackburn in December 2012.
