Gallagher is in charge of Stoke game

Last updated : 13 December 2004 By Tony Scholes

It was Gallagher, from Banbury, who refereed the Burnley v Spurs Worthington Cup tie that ended in triumph for the Clarets. He came in for some early stick from the Turf Moor crowd who thought he was favouring the Premiership club but a second viewing from the television pictures showed that he had an excellent game.

He is considered by many within the game to be the best referee in the country now and is certainly not the officious, pompous kind of referee that so gets the backs up of managers, players and supporters alike.

This season he has refereed a total of 17 games and he is almost averaging 3 yellow cards per game with 50 along with just 2 red cards.

He can hardly be considered a homer where those yellow cards are concerned and there has been an even distribution to home and away players with 25 each.

The red cards, both in September, have gone to Sheffield Wednesday’s Derek Geary in a 2-1 2nd Division win at Wycombe and Roque Junior of Leeds as they went down 2-0 at home to Birmingham.

Gallagher’s assistants at Turf Moor will be Paul Canadine and Rob Martin who are both from South Yorkshire.
