Full back is half time guest

The guest is Fred Smith one of the many youngsters who came to Burnley from the North East during that period and there is no doubt he was a player who would have made many more Burnley appearances for the Clarets but for the fact that he was competing with John Angus for a place in the side.

He made his debut in a remarkable game at Stoke and it was a match that was a tough match with Jimmy Mac on the opposing side. It ended 4-4 and Smith had stood in for Alex Elder at left-back although he was to play the bulk of his games on the other side.

His best season was the 1968/69 season and he played in the side that season which won eight consecutive matches as well as playing in all three League Cup Semi-Final matches against Swindon.

In 1970 he left the Clarets, along with Colin Blant, signing for 2nd Division Portsmouth for £10,000 and becoming a regular in their first team during his first two seasons. In total he was at Fratton Park for four years and then moved on again this time to Halifax. He had just a season at the Shay before retiring from the game and returning to Burnley where he still lives today.

In another era Fred Smith would have been a regular in the Burnley side, he just happened to be around at the same time as Angus.
