From Turf Moor to Sunderland

It's OK they haven't turned up and grabbed Stan off us, in fact they have put Kevin Ball in temporary charge this morning although Bally's reign is expected to last no longer than a couple of days.

With the eccentric Wilkinson relieved of his duties to allow him to search for his lost marbles and with Cotterill following him out of the Stadium of Light (presumably still writing everything down) the Mackems have asked their former hero Bally to take charge until a permanent appointment is made.

They have promised that the appointment will be made before Saturday and our sources suggest that former Republic of Ireland and Millwall boss Mick McCarthy is just about certain to be the next manager to try and keep the club in the Premiership.

But Bally will not be the first ex-Claret by any means to have been in charge of the Wearside club, not by any stretch of the imagination.

It is the club that our manager and captain both support and over the years we have provided them with a number of managers.

Alan Brown left Turf Moor in the 1950s to manage them and that paved the way eventually for Harry Potts to come in, and we all know what happened then. Brown who had two spells there as well as a period as with Sheffield Wednesday boss, also captained Burnley to promotion and an FA Cup Final in 1946/47.

Our next FA Cup Final captain Jimmy Adamson also managed Sunderland as did Dave Merrington and Mick Docherty (although the latter two were only in charge on a temporary basis).

And to add to those two there were also Billy Elliott and Mick Buxton.

But now for just a short time it is Bally and he could be just the man to instill some passion and urgency into the club. I'm sure all Burnley fans will join Clarets Mad in sending him best wishes.
