From monitoring to offering in a day

Since Lafferty's attack on Owen Coyle in the Belfast press two weeks ago triggered all this off there has been little heard from Celtic. It has been Rangers and Wolves or Wolves and Rangers with no other club showing any apparent interest.

Then yesterday we learned that Strachan was monitoring the situation whilst enjoying the delights of Vienna with the BBC at Euro2008. Now, according to today's speculation he's given up the monitoring and has not only moved in with a firm offer but had it turned down, yet again without a text from Burnley to confirm it.

Apparently the offer is £2.5 million plus Derek Riordan which is exactly what they offered in January. Now this offer is different than either of those from the other two clubs in that the player on offer as part of the deal is someone we have openly said we are interested in signing.

However, it seems we have done exactly what we did five months ago and turned it down, with it being reported that we now value Riordan at less than we did in January (when our value wasn't good enough to sign him) because he's played just six minutes football.

With Coyle away on holiday it was left to Sandy Stewart to comment and he said: "Kyle has two years left on his contract and he is a valuable member of our squad. "We would prefer to keep him but if he does leave then he will only do so if another club agrees to pay the going rate and, up until now, no one has come close to doing that."
