Fred West gets new deal

Stan said earlier today that he was hoping to sort out both West and Marlon Beresford with both of these players on monthly deals.

West's previous contract came to an end at the end of June but with the finances at the club hit by the loss of television money Stan was unable to offer him a long term deal. The last four months have seen him on monthly deals but he has now signed a longer deal and has committed himself to the club until the end of the 2003/04 season.

He has been at Burnley since the beginning of the 1999/2000 season when he joined from Bury on a Bosman. He had previously been a Stan signing at Gigg Lane when he took him from Lincoln.

His time at Burnley has been somewhat mixed. He was a regular in his first season but following promotion had to sit and watch for most of the 2000/01 season as we established ourselves in Division One. We used a variety of players in his position but he didn't get a game until April.

It looked set to be the same when we signed Mark McGregor but that was not the case and Fred was the regular right back last season, missing only the odd match.

Despite him not being under a long term contract that has continued this season and he has finally scored his first goal for the club with a free kick in the Worthington Cup tie against Blackpool. He added to that with a penalty against Millwall but missed his second effort from the spot on Saturday.

Stan and Fred will both be relieved that it has now been sorted as will the fans, we now await news on Marlon's future at the Turf.
