Franchise game called off

We’ve had games called off at Burnley due to frozen and waterlogged pitches in the past and also in fog but this is certainly the first time I can recall a fixture being called off for this reason.

However, both the Safety Officer Alex Wood and the Match Commander Inspector Shepherd were concerned enough to make the recommendation with reports that people were unable to even stand in safety in the upper tiers of the two newer stands.

Certainly conditions were not good even at pitch level with the corner flags only just about able to hold their position whilst there was surface water on the pitch. There is no doubt that we would not have been able to have a good game of football.

It is bad news for the Club and it was certainly a game that we needed to play and a game we needed to win, and win well. There was initially a delay for thirty minutes but the main question to be asked is whether it could have been called off earlier to avoid people travelling.
