Foy is cup referee

Last updated : 26 October 2004 By Tony Scholes

The St Helens referee was last with the Clarets for our first away game of the season at Rotherham. It was a quiet night in terms of quality football and action and the referee had little to involve himself in and took just one name, that of Michael Duff.

The season as a whole has been a quiet one for this particular referee and in nine games to date he has handed out just twenty-one yellow cards and one red card.

The red card was a poor decision in front of the Sky cameras when he dismissed Sheffield United’s Phil Jagielka for a foul on David Healy as the Blades won 1-0 at Deepdale.

Only the Weary Whinger thought it was the correct decision, and unlike Michael Jones from the Burnley v Stoke match the referee agreed to look at it again and rescinded the red card.

It is fair to say that he is a referee who is much more likely to card players in the away team and that is reflected again this season with only five of those yellow cards going the way of home team players.

Referring to his Burnley game this season, it is not the first time he has refereed a game between the two sides, he was in charge when we threw one in against them two seasons ago. We can do without anything like that tonight.

He will be assisted by Graeme Atkins (West Yorkshire) and Glenn Turner (Derbyshire).
