The Warrington born defender has signed a two year deal with our Championship rivals and their manager Simon Davey has admitted that he's been a target throughout the summer but has had to wait because Burnley wouldn't, until now, sell him.

Davey said: "We have brought in Stephen because we have been looking for a right-sided central defender and we needed competition in that department. We have been tracking him all summer but Burnley were not willing to do business until now."

Burnley boss Steve Cotterill, on completing the deal, added: "For the second time in about ten days we have received a good fee. We got Stephen in on a free transfer and then to be selling him for £100,000, that's a good deal for us.

"He's been a good servant to us but he has perhaps been unable to break through and play in the starting line up all of the time. We are hoping now he can maybe start playing some regular football. He's been a very good team member but he obviously wants to play some football. He's a good lad, and we will miss him."

Foster, whose last league appearance for the Clarets was at Southend last March. He came on early as a substitute for the injured John McGreal but was replaced himself later in the game with an injury that brought his season to an early end.

Tomorrow he's expected to make his Barnsley debut against Plymouth, the very club he made his first league start against for Burnley.
