Former England boss dies

Greenwood was from the era when managers stayed with their clubs somewhat longer than they do now, and after a playing career with Bradford Park Avenue, Brentford, Chelsea and Fulham, which ended in 1956 he moved into coaching and management.

He was firstly the assistant manager at Arsenal before joining West Ham as manager just before the end of the 1960/61 season. He held that position for thirteen years and with some success, as the Hammers won the FA Cup and European Cup Winners Cup as well as providing three players for the England side that went on to win the World Cup in 1966.

In 1974 he became General Manager before taking over from Don Revie as England manager in 1977 and leading us to the World Cup in Spain in 1982, after which he retired and handed over to Bobby Robson.

Although much of his football life was spent in the capital he was not a southerner and was born in Burnley, Worsthorne to be exact, in 1921. He remained in the south after retirement and it was at his home in Suffolk where he passed away this morning.

Our thoughts are very much with his wife Lucy and his family.
