The north east club, based ten minutes from Tommy's home are backed by multi-millionaire David Thompson and have this season moved to the 10,000 seat Kingston Park, sharing with Newcastle Falcons.

The ultra ambitious club have dismissed manager Andy Gowens after just three games and turned to Cassidy, who has had a successful time with Workington at Borough Park where they have improved their position in every season.

Workington chairman Humphrey Dobie admitted it all came out of the blue. "I took a call from the Blue Star owner David Thompson asking he if could talk to Tommy about the manager's job. When I told Tommy of their interest I said that we didn't want to lose him but we would understand if he wanted to talk to Blue Star.

"After sleeping on it he said that he had decided to leave. The job will be a little bit more money for him and it is also much hander for him. He has a nine-month rolling contract with us at Workington so we will be seeking compensation from the Blue Star club.

I tried my best to keep him but he felt he had to take it. He goes with my goodwill, I have nothing but praise for him."
