Former Claret and Plymouth player Latcham is guest

Les was the one player Best simply couldn’t play against and when the two met you could all but guarantee that the Manchester United and Northern Ireland player would have a poor game.

They clashed countless times but the Burnley full back always got the better of him. But Les wasn’t always a full back and started his first team career further up the pitch on the left wing, and co-incidentally he came up against Best and Manchester United on his debut in 1965.

It was full back where he settled and with the departure of Alex Elder to Stoke he made the position his own for a number of years. He was though a versatile player who could play in any position and when Peter Mellor went off injured on the opening day of the 1969/70 season it was Les who took the green jersey and went in goal for the last few minutes of the game.

His Burnley career came to an end following relegation in 1971, after 153 league games for the Clarets, and he joined our visitors tomorrow Plymouth Argyle for £15,000. His stay at Home Park lasted two years during which time he was a regular in their side, but in the summer he moved on again to Bradford City. He was there just a few months before calling time on his professional career.

Without doubt, a very good first division full back in his time, and there were many around who would have loved to have learned his secret as to how to deal with Best.
