Former Claret and North Ender to make draw

The ex-Claret in question is Tony Morley who signed for the Clarets from Preston in 1976 during our last season in the top flight. He was Joe Brown’s first signing as manager although it is rumoured that it was a deal brokered by Bob Lord and Tom Finney.

Morley was already making a name for himself and the week before the Clarets moved in smartly to get him he had turned down Arsenal because of his wishes to stay in the north of England.

After relegation Morley, whose hair was longer than most at the club, was recommended by Chairman Bob Lord to return for pre-season training with it shorter. He did, he returned with no hair at all and with his ears exposed so was the ear ring. Bob Lord had something to say.

Things never really worked out as well as they could have done for him at the Turf although he did play in 102 league and cup games scoring seven goals before he was sold to Aston Villa for £200,000.

His last goal for Burnley will long be remembered by those of us who saw it – it was the winner at Ewood Park in a 2-1 victory in 1979.

Once at Villa things took off for him. He won six full England caps, a Championship medal, a European Cup winners medal and also Match of the Day’s Goal of the season competition that won a regular visitor to this web site a big prize for voting for him.

Most of the remainder of his career was spent in the Birmingham area and he also played for West Brom (twice) and Birmingham as well as clubs in Hong Kong, Holland, America and Malta.

There was also in 1988 a return to Burnley where he played five more games on loan, including a man of the match performance at York.

Now 49 he was very much in the news last year when his face was seen on a big poster campaign after he registered with a dating agency. Maybe we will find out tomorrow if he was successful.
