Former captain is draw guest

Waldo was the mainstay of the Burnley defence throughout the successful period of the 1970s when the Clarets returned to the First Division and had two seasons when we were challenging at the top of the league.

He had signed from Chelsea in 1967 and a year later was appointed club captain after Andy Lochhead left for Leicester. He only held the position for a short time and lost his place in the side.

But with a change of manager in 1970 came a change in fortune and Colin Waldron was the man Jimmy Adamson turned to. No player played more games for the Clarets under Adamson’s management than Waldron who was a regular throughout the six years.

He scored the goal that clinched the 2nd Division Championship at Deepdale in 1973 and in the very next game scored the goal that won us the Charity Shield against Manchester City at Maine Road.

He former a fantastic partnership with Jim Thomson at the back and when Martin Dobson was sold to Everton he again became the club captain. That was to last two years and after relegation he was released along with a number of other players with the club appearing to be in some turmoil.

He played 308 league games for us, 356 in all competitions – and he remains a player who wins a place of the best Burnley players I have seen wear the famous Claret & Blue.

Waldo should get a fantastic welcome from the Turf Moor crowd tonight.
