Fletcher is guest

Fletcher was at Huddersfield as Chief Executive during the time when they built the McAlpine Stadium and then moved on to Bolton as Stadium Manager overseeing all aspects of the building of the Reebok. The Wembley project was next and more recently the new planned stadium at Coventry.

But it is as a striker that he is best known to Burnley fans and was a record signing for the Clarets when he arrived from Bolton for £60,000 in 1971 during our relegation season from Division One.

He soon established himself in the side and former an excellent partnership with Frank Casper as the Clarets returned to the top division two years later. Within a year both him and Frank suffered bad injuries although unlike his partner Paul recovered and was able to continue.

A hugely popular player he won England Under 23 honours but just missed out on a full cap in the mid 70s and his chances disappeared once Burnley were again relegated.

He scored his last Burnley goal in a 1-0 win at Wrexham in March 1979 but went on to play another 21 league games for the club before moving on to Blackpool, an early signing for their new manager Stan Ternent. In total he scored 71 league goals for the Clarets in 293 appearances.

His career came to an end at Blackpool when he broke a leg in what was to be his last game for the club before a transfer to Walsall.

A renowned after dinner speaker he recently teamed up with another ex-Claret Steve Kindon with a ‘Boys from Burnley’ show. I suspect he might have something to say tomorrow when he is interviewed before the game.
