Fletcher completes Wolves move

And today Fletcher has completed a move to Wolves for an undisclosed fee that smashes the previous best which was Kyle Lafferty to Rangers for £3.25 million.

Fletcher had said that he was happy to stay at Burnley, despite the relegation, but given the attention from the Premier League there never seemed to be any doubt that he would move on at some stage during the summer.

Bolton were the first club to show an interest, but Burnley's valuation of Fletcher soon put an end to any interest they had, placing him out of their reach. Similarly, Blackburn who apparently showed an interest in the last week would also have had the same problem in finding the transfer fee.

That left Birmingham and Wolves. Brum boss Alex McLeish knows all about him from his time as Scotland boss although their interest did seem to cool somewhat and that always left Wolves, the Premier League's lowest scorers last season, as favourites.

He held talks with Wolves last week, and with Chris Iwelumo at Turf Moor it was thought he might be involved in the deal, but that was not the case and Iwelumo completed his move to Turf Moor at the beginning of this week.

Fletcher has now made his move to Wolves after just one year at Burnley following his signing from Hibs at the end of June last year when he put pen to paper on a four year deal.

He's had an excellent first season in the Premier League with the Clarets, scoring eight goals, and given the opportunity to play at the top level again it is no surprise he has taken it.

Brian Laws said after the deal was completed: "Obviously I was reluctant to let Steven go, but of course I understand that he is gaining Premier League football and a financial package that we could not get anywhere near to.

"We wish him well and thank Steven for all his efforts and support last seaosn in our attempts to secure Premier League status.

"I am sure I speak on behalf of everyone at Turf Moor when I wish him every success and hopefull we will meet again in the not too distant future."
