Fleetwood fall to Clarets

It was a good result after Saturday's loss at Chesterfield. I know pre-season results aren't really important but it's certainly better to win than lose, and certainly more enjoyable. And when a good performance is thrown in then even better. That's what we got last night as we made a first ever first team appearance at the League One club's ground.

After an early departure from Burnley we made it to the ground just about four and a half hours before kick off. At least we got a good parking spot before going off for refreshments and the obligatory amusement arcade where one of our group managed to get a bandit to start paying out continuously until they came and switched it off before it emptied completely.

The winnings helped pay for the tram ride back to the ground for the last away friendly of pre-season.

When the team news was confirmed, neither of Fredrik Ulvestad and David Jones, who have been the main occupants of the centre of midfield, were in the team. Ulvestad was on the bench but Jones was not included.

Scott Arfield and Matt Taylor took their places but it was up front where most notice was taken with both Marvin Sordell and Jelle Vossen in the starting eleven and Sam Vokes sitting alongside Lukas Jutkiewicz, who has been our lone striker in recent games, on the bench .

The Burnley fans in the crowd, and I find it hard to believe they were only a third of the total, gave the two ex-Clarets, Stephen Jordan and Graham Alexander, a warm reception. It was to be our night though, both in terms of performance and result.

After a quite opening it was the Clarets who took control and it was no surprise when we took the lead, and a good goal it was too. It started on the right where Michael Keane, who was hugely impressive all night, played the ball across to the left for Stephen Ward, another top performer.

Ward found Michael Kightly before continuing his run forward. Kights came inside and played the ball to Sordell who delivered a fine ball into the box for the onrushing Ward. It was an excellent pass from Sordell which went largely ignored by the two critics of his play to my right.

Ward saw his effort saved by goalkeeper Chris Maxwell with the same happening to his follow up shot. But he was not to be denied a third time and, from a tight angle, found the net for his first goal in Burnley colours.

Sordell went close himself, seeing a shot go narrowly wide, but he was not to be denied his goal. Scott Arfield won the ball for Burnley and released Vossen down the right. His low ball into the box found Kightly whose neat touch to Sordell saw the striker fouled for the clearest of penalties.

It was our first spot kick since the Leicester game and there was some debate who was going to take it. Kightly looked keen, so did Vossen, but Sordell wanted it and sent the keeper the wrong way before planting into the bottom corner.

We might have had another penalty soon afterwards; we clearly should have had another penalty soon afterwards but referee David Coote laughed, his assistant wasn't even looking as Keane almost had his shirt ripped off his back as he looked to head home at the far post.

It's a friendly, but one day someone is going to have to act on these shirt pulls, and that starts with inept referees who can't be bothered to do anything about it. It was a shocking piece of refereeing.

Fleetwood rarely threatened and we could so easily have added to those two goals before the half time whistle blew, but I'm sure 2-0 pleased Sean Dyche with us not having allowed Fleetwood back into the game as we had Chesterfield.

The second half was one of changes. There were two at the start of the half with Cameron Dummigan and Vokes replacing Matt Lowton and Vossen, and by the end only Tom Heaton, Keane, Ward and Kightly remained on the pitch from the team that started.

This half I had a much better view of our defending than attacking, being situated right behind one goal, and at no point did I ever thing we were going to concede a goal. I can't recall Heaton having too much to do with the defensive four in front of him all playing so well.

At the far end the eccentric Maxwell was all over the place, even once chasing a ball all the way to his left touchline and just about getting there, but he did make a couple of saves to deny us as we went looking for a third.

And it all came close to ending in glory for Dummigan. He'd had a good half and almost crowned it with a spectacular goal, his powerful shot from distance only just missing the target.

This performance was much more like us and Dyche said afterwards: "That was more what we are about in terms of the energy, the work ethic of the players, the pressing and the shape. All of those things are starting to come back, even with the changes we made."
