First Turf Moor game for referee

Last updated : 08 May 2004 By Tony Scholes

He has previously refereed Burnley games on three occasions and it is difficult to forget the first of those, a 1-0 defeat at Bristol Rovers, where he wrecked the game all by himself.

Ten yellow cards, one red card, a penalty award that was nothing short of a joke and Stan blasting that he was not fit to be refereeing in the Football League. The words from Rovers boss Ian Holloway were no less condemning after one of the worst refereeing performances I have ever seen.

They kept him away from us for over three years but he was referee in two of our away wins last season, the 1-0 league victory at Leicester and the 3-0 FA Cup win at Brentford when he yellow carded Gareth Taylor when the ball hit his back from a home free kick, apparently for not retreating.

This season he is just below the three yellow cards per game average with 89 and 4 red from 31 fixtures. Three of those red cards have come in the last month with two of them in the same Bradford v Reading Division One game.

Although the yellow cards have been reasonably evenly distributed with 42 to home team players and 47 to away team players we will need to beware. In recent weeks most of the cards have gone to home players and it is not long ago that he was running at close to twice as many away players.

Three of the red cards have also gone to away players.

I’m sure he will not referee as he did on that August Bank Holiday Monday in 1999 at Bristol, I don’t think any referee could have two games as bad as that.

He will be assisted by Peter Eastwood (Greater Manchester) and Kevin Mattocks (Lancashire).
