First timer at the Withdean

Wright is in his second season as a Football League referee and has refereed neither of the two clubs before. Tomorrow will be his fourth game at this level in the last month but apart from that there were just two games in our division last season.

The first of those was in January when he sent off both John Hills and Ian Cox of Gillingham in their 2-1 defeat against Derby at Pride Park. In all of his games in our division he has handed out at least three yellow cards and that is about his average.

This season he has given out a total of 35 yellows in 13 games but so far not a single red card. He started off the season with a rush of booking home team players but he as swiftly reversed that and more recently it is those playing for the away teams who have seen more of his yellow card.

To date sixteen of the yellow cards have gone the way of the home players whilst the other nineteen have gone to the away team players.

Last week he was involved in a game that could prove vital to the future of one of the Football League clubs – Wrexham. He was referee of their 4-0 FA Cup win at Hayes which has led to a 2nd round tie against Scunthorpe live on television.

I’m not sure he’ll be in a position to do us such favours but if he can just stop Brighton scoring twice in the last few minutes that would be a start.

He will be assisted by Sukhdev Thiarra (Bedfordshire) and Steve Tincknell (Hertfordshire).
