Last Wednesday the Clarets confirmed they had made an offer for Mears that had been accepted by the Derby board and manager Owen Coyle had discussed the deal with Willie McKay, Mears' agent.

The player flew home from holiday to meet with Coyle and after those talks agreed to join the Clarets and become our first signing since we beat Sheffield United at Wembley to win promotion to the Premier League. Mears has signed a three year deal with the Clarets and the fee is an initial £500,000 with add ons.

Having failed to make it at Manchester City he signed for Preston where he enjoyed four years in the Championship before signing for West Ham in the summer of 2006. His time there was short lived and by January he had moved to Derby, initially on loan.

Last season he was with French club Marseille on loan. They had an option to sign him but the lure of the Premier League in England has proved too much and Mears, who has twice been sold for fees of £1 million, is now a Claret.

Clarets boss Owen Coyle said of the deal: "We are delighted to get Tyrone. He is a player with real pace and we have been looking for that in the full back areas.

"He is hungry, still relatively young and desperate to do well. He was on loan at Marseille last year and did terrifically well, so much so that they wanted to sign him permanently.

"Fortunately, he wanted to be back in England and we know he will do well here because he has already shown a desire to show everyone that he is a Premier League player. Here at Turf Moor he will get that opportunity."
