First Burnley game this year for referee Jones

Last updated : 19 December 2014 By Tony Scholes

The 46-year-old Jones joined the Football League list at the start of the 1997/98 season, and his first Burnley game was our 1-1 home draw that season against Brentford in which he yellow carded Andy Payton.

Tomorrow will be his 27th Burnley game and there has been no lack of controversy in a number of them from the outrageous penalty he awarded to Chesterfield that won the game against us in 1998 through to his handling of our Premier League home game against Hull five years ago, a performance for which the Hull fans have hardly forgiven him.

In that game he sent of Hull's Geovanni in what was his first game back in the Premier League after being axed for the beach ball goal at Sunderland a couple of weeks earlier. He's sent off five players in Burnley games but thankfully Michael Duff, against Stoke in 2004, is the only Burnley player.

The best of the lot was Craig Hignett in 2002 playing for Coventry and in 2007 he sent of West Brom's Paul McShane for head butting James O'Connor when there had been a clash of heads.

McShane won that appeal as did Rajiv van La Parra of Wolves, sent off in identical circumstances against Bournemouth two weeks ago. Matt Doherty was also sent off in that game with Wolves appealing both. They won one but lost the Doherty appeal. There were also five yellow cards in the game.

His total of cards this season is 41 yellow and five red. Of those yellow cards, 17 have gone to home team players and 24 to away team players. Three of the players sent off, including those from Wolves, were playing for the home team with the other two playing for the away team.

What isn't a surprise to me is that only one of those Burnley games he's refereed has been an away win. That was Reading's 3-0 win at Turf Moor when we gave Kyle Lafferty his first start and played him up front alongside Duff.

I have far less concerns with this referee when we are playing at home than I do when we are the away side.

The assistant referees tomorrow are Richard West (East Yorkshire) and Eddie Smart (West Midlands). The fourth official is Keith Hill (Hertfordshire) whose last Burnley game was our 3-0 Carling Cup win against Oldham in 2007.
