Farewell to Cooky and Payts

Last updated : 23 April 2003 By Tony Scholes

Payts hasn’t featured in the league since a short substitute appearance back in August against Sheffield United and it is now over two years since he started a first team game for the Clarets.

With this in mind nobody will be surprised that he is not being retained as we look to reduce the wage bill further. His last goal was in October 2001, a late penalty in the 3-3 draw with Barnsley. He had come on in that game for Dean West.

He hasn’t been on the bench much recently and in fact has hardly featured in the reserves but did play the first half of the game away to Sheffield United at the end of January when he scored twice.

Cooky however has been very much involved with the first team this season and has played in 23 league games and captained the side on a number of occasions. He was on a one year contract that he signed not long after returning from a loan spell at Wigan during last season.

He was given the role in front of the back four at Fulham and retained that position during a good period until we went out of the FA Cup at Watford.

His last appearance was brief, he was substituted against Bradford after being badly fouled. The injury ruled him out for the rest of the season and has now ended his Burnley career.

At the time he admitted that it could have done but was still hoping that he would get another deal. He did say though that he would not join another club.

There has been plenty of speculation that both Cook and Payton could be joining Accrington Stanley in the Nationwide Conference next season but that remains to be seen.

What we do know is that their Burnley careers, very successful Burnley careers, are now over.

There will be more on both of them next week but for now Clarets Mad would like to thank both of them and wish them both the very best in the future.
