FA Cup gives us THE local derby

Jimmy Robson - scored in the 1959 win at Ewood
The last time the two sides met in a major cup competition the two sets of fans stood side by side over 210 minutes of football as the Clarets incredibly lost the tie after leading 3-0 in the first match at the Turf.

That was in the 6th round in 1960, Blackburn went on to lose the final whilst the Clarets had the greatest compensation possible, we became league champions.

We don’t have to go back too much further to the last time we beat them in the FA Cup, just a year in fact to the 4th round in 1959 when goals from our two inside forwards Jimmy Robson and Jimmy McIlroy gave us a 2-0 win at Ewood.

This time it is, as it was in 1960, at the Turf and will be played on Saturday 19th February unless it is moved for television coverage.

In recent years we have beaten Premiership clubs such as Derby, Spurs, Fulham, Aston Villa and Liverpool in cup competitions. For those of you not old enough to remember I can tell you that all of those will pale into insignificance if we can pull this one off. Wins really do not come any better than against the side from just down the M65.

The full draw for the 5th round is:

Bolton Wanderers v Derby County or Fulham

West Bromwich Albion or Tottenham Hotspur v Nottingham Forest

Everton v Manchester United

Charlton Athletic v Leicester City

Burnley v Blackburn Rovers

Southampton v Brentford or Hartlepool United

Newcastle United v Chelsea

Arsenal v West Ham United or Sheffield United
