Ex-Clarets in Football League action

Danny Coyne - league debut for Middlesbrough
Following our promotion we still had a week to wait before our season got underway but there was something of a Burnley flavour in the weekend games with no fewer than 32 former Burnley players involved in the match day squads.

Of those 23 of them were in their respective teams' starting line ups whilst for the other nine there were places on the bench with five of them coming on.

In that very first match the first two names on the home team sheet were Danny Coyne and right back Rhys Williams. Coyne, a signing from Tranmere during the summer, was making his debut for Middlesbrough whilst Williams was making a league for his parent bow after his loan spell with the Clarets last season.

On the visiting bench was Glen Little, signed by Sheffield United last week, but on this occasion he remained an unused substitute as the two sides won a point each from a goalless draw.

Looking down the results on Saturday evening there were some former Burnley players on the scoresheet. Pete Whittingham got Cardiff's last from the penalty spot in their 4-0 win against Scunthorpe, and Alan Lee came off the bench to earn Crystal Palace a point with the equaliser as they drew 1-1 at home to Plymouth.

Down in League One, Dean Bowditch had mixed fortunes. He scored in Yeovil's 2-0 win against Tranmere, a side that had both Alan Mahon and the strangely named Ian Thomas-Moore in their line up. However, it was another day of injuries for the former loan striker who ended the day having scans on a dislocated shoulder.

Of those 33 players, two of them never played a first team game for Burnley. One of them was Marc Pugh. He ended last season on loan at Hereford and signed for them on a permanent basis during the summer. He got his own season off to a good start with both goals for the Bulls as they won a point from a 2-2 draw at Morecambe.

Well done to Pughy, and also to all the others including Micah Hyde returning to league football as captain of Barnet and to Wayne Thomas who played his first league game for Southampton since March 2008 after recovering from a serious knee injury.
