Ex-Claret Yates sacked at Cheltenham

There has been a reaction to their heavy defeat to Wycombe on Saturday and only yesterday the Cheltenham chairman, in a statement to the fans, said he shared their concern and added: "Who is to say he (Yates) isn't the man to take us out of this difficult phase? We will discuss it as directors and come to a view."

That view came this morning with the news that the Football League's second longest serving manager, only Paul Tisdale at Exeter has been in his current job longer, would be leaving the club with immediate effect.

Yates was Frank Casper's last signing for Burnley, just after the start of the 1991/92 season, and scored on his debut in a 4-1 win at Doncaster. He was with us for two years but never established himself in the first team.

Cheltenham was where he became a big crowd favourite, a club for whom he played over 250 times. That was during Steve Cotterill's time as manager and it was Cotterill who brought him back to Turf Moor as coach in 2004. Yates remained with us for a season and a half before leaving to become manager of Kidderminster, another former club, and then on to Cheltenham in December 2009.
