Ex-Claret to take on reserves

John Mullin - Turf Moor return
It is once again a very inexperienced Burnley team that takes the field and on this occasion Stan has chosen not to include players such as Lee Roche for match practice. That leaves us with just one player in the squad with any first team experience and that is Matt O’Neill who has made only one substitute appearance in the first team this season.

There is a welcome back though for Gary Carter who has had a tough time with injuries. The young Londoner’s 2002/03 season was ended before Christmas with a serious injury sustained in the FA Youth Cup defeat against Crystal Palace. Two injuries this season have kept him out but he returns to the side tonight.

There were rumours of a trialist goalkeeper but these have proved to be unfounded and the 16 year-old Michael Hale will once again be in the side.

Burnley line up: Michael Hale, Danny Pitham, Gary Carter, Neal Trotman, Ryan Townsend, Joel Pilkington, Marc Pugh, Ross Preston, Matt O’Neill, Rhys Carpenter, Tom Ince. Subs: Alex Taylor, Curtis Aspin, Darrel Avery, James Heywood.

There are no problems of inexperience for Rotherham and besides Mullin they are able to include players such as Paul Hurst, Darren Garner, Richie Barker and Andy Monkhouse.

The Millers are currently third in the table and will go top if they collect all three points tonight with neither leaders Walsall nor second place Sheffield Wednesday playing.

Rotherham’s last reserve team game was just two weeks ago when they beat Stoke 3-2 at the Don Valley Stadium. Barker, Monkhouse and Mullin were their scorers.

Their team tonight is:

Gary Montgomery, Craig Mudd, Paul Hurst, Darren Garner, Stuart Ludlam, Gareth Clayton, Tom Fletcher, John Mullin, Richie Barker, Will Hoskins, Andy Monkhouse. Subs: Andy Jones, Jamie Waite, Liam Kay, Nick Page.
