Ex-Claret takes over

It will only be temporary, Philliskirk would prefer to remain coaching rather than taking over as manager. He has built himself a very good reputation as a coach, particularly at youth level, and was in charge of the Oldham team who beat the Clarets in the final of last season’s Lancashire FA Youth Cup.

It was a change of career when he went to Oldham having initially taken up refereeing as he came towards the end of his playing career. That end was in May 1998 when he played his last game for Macclesfield where he was on loan from Cardiff.

He was a Jimmy Mullen signing for the Clarets in the spring of 1994 as we pushed towards the play offs. The Burnley fans never took to him and after scoring a hat trick in a 5-0 win over Barnet he was booed off when Mullen substituted him near the end.

He’ll have the help of the senior professionals at Oldham whilst in charge and that will include David Eyres. He’ll return to the coaching just as soon as a new man is appointed with such as Ronnie Moore and Mark Wright having been linked. Oldham have become the 26th club to change manager since the start of this season.
