Ex-Claret snubs Millwall

Merrington has had a long career in football since he played his last game for the Clarets and apart from a spell at Turf Moor has worked as a coach at a number of clubs and managed both Sunderland and Southampton.

He worked with Millwall boss Colin Lee at both Wolves and Walsall, he was his assistant manager at Walsall, and Lee was keen to continue that partnership at the Den. However, Merrington turned it down after initially looking as if he was set to say yes.

He was offered only a six month contract and said, “The period of the contract sends out the wrong message. The players and fans know you could be out as quick as the last man. You need a short and long term planning programme. It shows a lack of foresight, vision and ambition.”

Lee, who has also failed to persuade Paul Bracewell to join his team at the Den, said, “Dave could have played a vital role in what I am trying to do here. He is a magnificent motivator of players and brought through Matt Le Tissier, Alan Shearer and the Wallace brothers at Southampton.

“But there is a cut off point in terms of finances, so now unfortunately we have to go and look elsewhere. The acting Chairman [the partially deaf Theo Paphitis] tried to make it work so I am not criticising Millwall, but I can also see Dave’s position.
