Hartlepool, struggling near the bottom of League Two, have appointed former player Paul Murray as manager with Donachie being appointed as his number two, his first senior role in England since leaving Millwall in October 2007.

After a spell managing the Antigua and Barbuda side, he was appointed assistant academy director at Newcastle, later becoming development coach, but he resigned in February of this year  after it was alleged that he'd hit reserve team player Remi Streete following a 2-0 defeat against Sunderland in an under-21 game.

Donachie, who has also coached at Oldham, Everton, Manchester City and Ipswich, working with Joe Royle, joined the Clarets in November 1982 just in time to make a debut in a 2-1 home win against Cambridge.

He was the left-back in the team that, under Brian Miller and then Frank Casper, reached the semi-finals of the League Cup and the FA Cup sixth round but was ultimately relegated to the third division at the end of that season.

He spent one more season at Turf Moor, the Bond season, where he was a regular in the team, before being released. He signed for Oldham and went on to play for several more years whilst also joining the coaching staff under Royle.
