Eltringham is cup referee

Last updated : 26 August 2014 By Tony Scholes

It's a while since Eltringham was at Turf Moor. His last game was the 1-0 home win against Leeds back in November 2012, a game we won courtesy of a Charlie Austin goal seven minutes from time.

That Leeds game was just his third refereeing Burnley; he'd previously refereed two home games against Leicester in 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons. In the first of those Leicester games he had a disappointing game; in the second he had an absolute shocker. He was, thankfully, much better in the Leeds game.

It was back in August 2009 that he first refereed in the Football League, a League Two fixture between Morecambe and Hereford, and by February of that season he was given his first Championship game; that was between our opponents tonight Sheffield Wednesday and Blackpool at Hillsborough.

He still referees mostly in the lower two divisions and the Blackburn v Bournemouth game last Saturday was his first Championship game this season and only a third in his last 17 games.

He's also refereed three League One games this season and the Capital One Cup tie between Sheffield United and Mansfield, and in those five games he's handed out 13 yellow cards and three red cards.

Seven of the yellow cards have gone to home team players and six to away team players. All three players sent off were playing for the home team. Harry Forrester of Doncaster was sent off in their 3-1 home defeat against Port Vale and a week ago tonight he sent off both of Notts County's Cieron Keane and Nicky Wrote although they did hold on to beat Colchester 2-1.

The assistant referees tonight are Philip Dermott (Lancashire) and Robert Jones (Merseyside). The fourth official is Nigel Miller (County Durham) whose last Burnley game was the 1-1 home draw against Nottingham Forest in April 2013.
