Sam left Burnley, along with Stan Ternent, in May 2004 but was quickly back in work as assistant to Kevin Blackwell at Leeds, but after they failed to win promotion via the play offs he was not offered a new deal.

He went to the Windy City to help out after Tony Pulis returned as manager and this week finally accepted the offer of a permanent position, although he had received offers from two other Championship clubs.

Pulis said of the new appointment: “Big Sam is going to stay with us for the foreseeable future and I am delighted about that because he has soon moulded in well and brings a wealth of experience with him.

“He's been at big clubs like Manchester City and Leeds, so he knows how to handle all kinds of players. He blends in well with younger coaches like Mark O'Connor and he certainly isn't a ‘yes' man.
