Elliott goes back to Bristol

Elliott, who left Burnley for Birmingham in August 2011, was released by the cash strapped St. Andrew's club at the end of last season but by then had already played 19 games for Bristol City during a loan spell.

It always looked likely that he'd return to Ashton Gate once he became a free agent and today he's completed his move there for the 2014/15 season, reuniting with Steve Cotterill, the manager who brought him to Burnley nine years ago.

He's Cotterill's second summer signing and he said of Elliott: "I've known Wade a long time. He's got so much experience and was invaluable to us last season. We looked a far better unit when he came into the midfield.

"He's so calm under pressure and helps the team get the ball from defence to attack. Add that to the fact that he's a fantastic lad and player, I feel he's a great addition to the squad.

"You've only got to see the top players currently involved at the World Cup; Pirlo, Klose, Gerrard, all of them in their 30s. As long as you get the right player, they can be just as valuable as someone aged 22,23 or 24.

"The way he rubbed off on the squad last year was there for all to see. We've got some good professionals in the group; Sam Baldock is another. The more you have of that sort, the better."

Elliott, now aged 35, has played a total of 580 league games having made his league debut for Bournemouth in a 2-0 defeat at Reading in March 2000, playing alongside former Burnley management duo Eddie Howe and Jason Tindall. Over 250 of those games were for the Clarets between 2005 and 2010.
