Eli robs Eli's at Madiham

But the result didn't matter today, it was all about everyone having an enjoyable day out and raising a few quid for MacMillan. Cancer Support, and we did that and more with over £1,500 raised so far in memory of NUTZ who sadly passed away with cancer in June last year.

In front of a healthy crowd of considerably more than 300 the Clarets Mad team took the game to their illustrious opponents and shook them by going into a two goal lead.

"The Vintage Clarets don't look like scoring a goal," said one spectator but within about five minutes of that they'd not only pulled one back but drawn level, the goals coming from two of the Jimmy Mullen promotion teams, Andy Farrell and Graham Lancashire.

It was 2-2 at half time and the game was decided in the second half but it was not without controversy. The original Eli, namely Roger, went down under a challenge in the box and the referee immediately pointed to the spot.

Peter Mumby, on the hour, beat John Robertson the Clarets Mad goalkeeper. In conceding the goal at that precise time he netted himself £60 in the goal sweep.

Was it a penalty? No, said the Clarets Mad players who confirmed their belief that Eli had gone down untouched. Eli, when challenged, totally agreed with them.

As Big Dave went round with this collecting bucket it was clear the big winners were the charity in what was a wonderful day, and I was delighted to be able to welcome members of NUTZ's family including his wife Janet, daughter Sam and brother Steve.

I think we did them and NUTZ proud. I've certainly never felt as proud to be involved with this web site as I did this afternoon and a big thanks from me to all those who took part, to those who came to watch and those who have helped raise the money.

Special thanks too to Alan Smith and Padiham Football Club, to the Vintage Clarets who, from the first phone conversation with John Deary, were brilliant and to Lisa at Burnley Football Club who was superb in getting the kit arranged that saw our team take to the field looking very smart.

And thanks to the good old British weather for giving us the best day it's offered all year.
