Elder back at Turf Moor

Alex Elder
When Burnley signed Elder from Glentoran in January 1959 he was the last piece in the Championship jigsaw and was the proud owner of a Football League Championship medal just a week after his nineteenth birthday.

He went on to play for his country as well as appearing in the FA Cup Final and in European competition for Burnley. He played in eight of our European games and it would have been more for the then club captain but for a fall out with chairman Bob Lord.

Alex moved on at the end of that season to Stoke City who were his second and last league club. He'd played 330 games for the club and scored 17 goals. He's often remembered for the own goal against Leeds towards the end of the 1965/66 season. That is totally unfair, one of our best ever should be remembered for what he was - a great player who made a massive contribution during Burnley's golden era of the early 60s.

Now aged 66 he lives with his wife Rhona in southern Spain. It will be brilliant to see him back at Turf Moor once more.
