Edgar signs for Clarets

David Edgar
Edgar was out of contract at St. James' Park and turned down the offer of a new deal. He had talks with Birmingham but opted for Turf Moor and has completed his move to Burnley and signed a four year deal.

The 22-year-old Canadian born defender has been with Newcastle for eight years having come through the academy and he finally made the breakthrough into the first team on Boxing Day 2006 at Bolton playing at left back. In his second game he scored a stunning equaliser to earn a point from a 2-2 home draw against Manchester United.

But his first team opportunities have been limited and more often than not at full back rather than his preferred position in the centre of defence. In total he's played 23 games for the Toon with just 13 of them starts.

Twice last season Owen Coyle tried to bring him to Burnley on loan, but both times we were refused. Edgar wanted to come but the request was turned down on both occasions because of other defenders being unavailable.

He remained with Newcastle until the end of the season and played in the last game against Aston Villa that confirmed their relegation after fifteen years in the top flight. He was sent off in that game, receiving a second yellow card from referee Chris Foy in the third minute of stoppage time.

That card will rule him out of Burnley's trip to Stoke for the opening game but he will be available for the visit of Manchester United three days later as Premier League football arrives at Turf Moor.

Edgar, born in Kitchener, Ontario, is an under-20 international for his native Canada. He has been called up to the full squad but is still to make his debut at that level.
