Earl joins three former Burnley defenders

He has signed on a month’s loan with Southport who are managed by Mike Walsh the former Burnley loan player who is best known for wanting to be paid for a match he was refusing to play in.

He signed from Everton in December 1982, made his debut against Blackburn but then refused to play in the FA Cup although he wanted the bonus should we win. Brian Miller did the only thing open to him and sent him packing before his loan period was ended but nor before he had taken disciplinary action against him.

He was manager of Bury before Stan and in fact Stan was his assistant. He recently took over Southport who already had another former Burnley player there in Mark Winstanley. He had signed for the Sandgrounders last summer from Carlisle and up to December was a regular in the side.

He lost his place when the third former Burnley defender was signed, Neil Moore from Mansfield Town. Moore had only been at Mansfield for a few months before moving to Haig Avenue.

Southport are currently 15th in the Nationwide Conference with no real hope of making the end of season play offs and in fact they are only four points clear of the relegation places. It is a good opportunity for Earl whose previous loan spell at Stalybridge Celtic was in the Unibond League.

He signed today after playing for our reserves yesterday and Clarets Mad wish him all the best of luck in the next month.
