Eagles signs new contract

There has been plenty of speculaton over the summer surrounding the immediate future of the Burnley winger and in July, just ahead of the trip to Signapore, he was given permission to speak to SPL club Rangers.

He turned that down and at the time Brian Laws said the ball was now in the player's court. He wanted him to stay but wasn't prepared to allow him to leave for nothing at the end of his contract in twelve months time.

The rumours have continued but it all came to a head today. Sky Sports were revealing that he was close to agreeing a new deal yet the man who used to be in the know, Alan Nixon, was EXCLUSIVELY announcing that he was ready to move to Celtic.

That was never on the cards, and Nixon, who doesn't quite have the same contacts within Turf Moor as he once did, was some considerable distance wide of the mark.

Tonight, after Eagles had scored one goal and then won a penalty as the Clarets won 3-1 at Morecambe, manager Laws confirmed that he had agreed a new two year deal.

Laws said: "Chris has agreed to sign a new two year deal and is going to stay with us. That's great news for the fans and the football club because quite clearly he has the talent.

"He is taking on board what we are asking of him and he showed tonight in glimpses what he will produce for the rest of the season.

"It's really pleasing that he has committed himself to the club. It quashes any rumours about Celtic or Rangers. He wants to stay at Burnley and that's good enough for us.

"I'm hoping that it will give everyone a lift. It shows there is good harmony here and good competition and tonight showed that."
