For two years he's been linked with a number of clubs with Everton usually the one thought to be at the front of the queue. However, there's been little speculation since relegation was confirmed until Sunderland this week were said to be making an offer of around £1 million for him.
The Sunderland Echo, who are usually spot on with matters at the Stadium of Light, say they understand that there has been no offer and that Sunderland have no plans to make an offer for the player.
That takes us on to Kevin McDonald and, according to the Dundee press one of their local clubs is set for a cash windfall when Burnley sell their former player to Bolton for £3 million.
There Tom Duthie reported: "Since manager Owen Coyle, the man who took him [McDonald] south, left Burnley for Bolton in a controversial move back in January, there has been repeated speculation he would head back to Turf Moor to sign McDonald."
Duthie also says: "Several other top-flight outfits have been watching McDonald and that he will be staying in the Premiership next term looks likely."
This one is very interesting, and no matter what speculation there has been around Dundee it has never reached North East Lancashire. Speculation has been around that our former manager might want to sign some of our players but Mears, Eagles, Elliott, Fletcher, McCann and Rodriguez have been the names mentioned, not once McDonald who the previous boss didn't give a Premier League start to until December.
He had a longer run in the first team under Laws, until his indiscretion during the second half of the Manchester City game, than at any time previous in his two years at Burnley.
McDonald, like Eagles, has one year remaining on his Burnley contract. He might well be leaving this summer, and there again he might well be staying, but at not point have I become aware of any speculation surrounding a move from Turf Moor let alone the repeated speculation apparently heard on the banks of the Tay.
