Duff wins cap

The Irish drew 0-0 with Switzerland and the new Burnley full back was brought on as a 78th minute substitute for Motherwell’s Stephen Craigan. It brought Duff his third cap, the first since 2002, and hopes of more to come.

He has tonight become the 14th Burnley player to be capped by Northern Ireland at full international level and certainly joins and illustrious group of players that includes Alex Elder, Billy Hamilton, Willie Irvine and of course Jimmy McIlroy.

He’ll be hoping now to be part of Lawrie Sanchez’ team for the World Cup Qualifiers and looking to win his first start for his country.

It is fantastic news for the Clarets to have players involved in international football and there could be more with Micah Hyde in the Jamaican squad tonight besides Danny Coyne having to pull out of the Welsh squad through injury.

Tonight Michael Duff has become the first since Dimitri Papadopolous made his Greek debut against the Republic of Ireland in November 2002.
