Driver will leave Hearts

Last week, out of the blue, we were linked with the Oldham born winger with it reported that we'd made an offer of £1.5 million for him. Despite their manager Jim Jefferies knowing nothing about it, the offer had gone in but Burnley have not had any response from the Scottish Premier League club.

Since that news broke there have been a number of other clubs linked with him, and that list incredibly includes Chelsea who were apparently looking to take him on loan with a view to a permanent signing, although any such deal looked no more than being part of Chelsea getting a bigger quota of English born players.

Yesterday, Dutch Eredivisie champions Twente Enschede claimed they'd had a £3 million offer refused as new coach Michel Preud'homme looks to strengthen his squad, with suggestions that Hearts are looking for around £3.5 million before parting with the player.

Hearts' Director Sergejus Fedotovas said yesterday: "We have had a number of discussions with a few clubs, and I'm glad we have been getting very healthy interest in the player."

He added: ""Obviously, we will make a decision on what is in the best interests of the club. To a larger extent, the interests of the player and the club coincide - for us to achieve a sizeable transfer fee and the player to get to a higher level to continue his development would be quite important.

"We absolutely know what we want to achieve. If we get a proposal which falls within our expectations then we will consider it very seriously. If not, then we will keep the player for the benefit of the team."

Significantly Fedotovas confirmed that he did not expect Driver to be at Hearts come the beginning of next season and it certainly looks as though they are doing all they can to get the offers as high as possible before the inevitable sale of the winger who is hoping to break into the Scotland team in the near future.

I think the chances of Driver signing for Burnley are slight given that an offer of double ours has already been made so it looks as though a third successive summer of chasing him will end the same way as the previous two.
