Dowie is new Coventry boss

The Sky Blues have been searching for a new manager since the departure of Micky Adams almost five weeks ago, and it was obvious that the news was imminent when caretaker boss, and former Burnley boss, Adrian Heath was sacked yesterday with three other members of the coaching team also leaving the club.

Dowie is the man they have turned to, and he's someone who has been in demand recently. New Leicester owner Milan Mandaric admitted he'd spoken to him with a view to taking over at the Crisp Bowl and it has also been revealed that John Gregory, the QPR manager, was upset when he learned their Chairman Gianni Paladini had had talks with him.

But it is Coventry who have got the manager who wants to move north, and they have made their decision after setting a number of criteria in conjunction with their supporters consultative group, believing it to be essential in selecting the right candidate.

Dowie's first managerial role was at Oldham. He had just over eighteen months there before being head hunted by Crystal Palace. He got Palace promoted, but relegation followed a year later and as they struggled to make an impact back in the Championship it was clear that all was not well with him and Simon Jordan.

It came to an end when Dowie got himself out of his contract, according to Jordan so he could move back north, and was almost immediately installed as the Charlton manager. That proved to be a disaster, and he was sacked after just fifteen games of which only four were won.

That was three months ago, but now he's back in football with Coventry, and will take charge of the side tomorrow for the first time when they play Southampton.
