Dowd takes charge

Last updated : 28 November 2006 By Tony Scholes
Dowd sent off Tugay and Hossam Ghaly that day, both appealed, and both lost. They are the only two players he has sent off all season. In fact he's been fairly quiet with his yellow cards too with 43 in 16 games. The bookings have been fairly evenly distributed too, 20 of them going to home players and 23 to away players.

It is his first Burnley game for thirteen months, the last one being our 1-0 home win against Hull last season in front of the Sky cameras. He had a decent enough game that night, and overall he hasn't caused us too many problems over the years, probably the game of some poor penalty decisions against West Ham three seasons ago being the worst.

A game between Burnley and Leeds isn't a new experience for him either, he was the referee two seasons ago when we went to Elland Road and beat them 2-1 with goals from Lee Roche and Richard Duffy turning things round after we'd conceded a first minute goal.

I don't envisage many problems tonight – not if he referees as he's done in other games.

He will be assisted by Andy Halliday and Rob Martin (both Yorkshire) whilst Football League referee Steve Bratt (West Midlands) will act as fourth official. Bratt is in his first season on the League list and is another referee to be involved in a recent controversy in this area. He was the referee who sent off Accrington's Jay Harris for spitting at an opponent.
