Dowd - but surely not another penalty

Last updated : 30 January 2010 By Tony Scholes
It will be Dowd's third Burnley game this season and in the first two he's given penalties against us, both were shocking decisions and both were missed. In our second home game of the season he penalised Chris McCann for a supposed foul on Everton's Tony Hibbert. There had been no contact as Hibbert went down.

We were 1-0 up at the time through a Wade Elliott goal and thankfully Louis Saha put the spot kick to Brian Jensen's left and wide of his post.

More recently he astonishingly awarded Portsmouth a penalty against us in our game at Fratton Park. This time it was against Elliott for a foul of Hermann Hreidarsson. Again there was no contact, again it was a shocker of a decision and again they failed to score.

This time it was 0-0 and in the first half of the game. Aruna Dindane, the Pompey striker, hit his spot kick straight at Jensen. He had a busy afternoon with his cards too with no fewer than six yellows. Only two of those went to Burnley players - to Andre Bikey and Tyrone Mears.

He's taken his yellow card count now to 80 in 24 games with 35 of those going to home team players and 45 to away team players.

His four red cards this season all came in a three game spell in September and October. He sent off Chelsea's Petr Cech in their 3-1 defeat at Wigan. In his next game he dismissed Kagisho Dikgacoi of Fulham in a 2-2 draw against West Ham and one game on he sent off Tottenham's Jermain Defoe and Portsmouth's Michael Brown (both against former clubs) in Tottenham's 2-1 win at Fratton.

Whatever happens today, we can do without another Everton/Portsmouth style penalty from Phil Dowd.

The assistant referees are Andy Garratt (West Midlands) and Trevor Massey (Cheshire). The fourth official is Howard Webb (Rotherham) who had something of a nightmare when he refereed our game at Everton at the end of December.
