Doug Winton dies

Winton, a full back, was often known as Jock by the Burnley fans after joining the club from junior football in Scotland in 1947, then a winger. It was 1952 when he made his debut for the club and he won a regular place during the 1953/54 season as replacement for Harold Mather at left back.

For over four seasons he was a regular in the side but lost his place in the side after ten games of the 1958/59 and in the January of that season he signed for Aston Villa. He spent two years at Villa Park before signing for Rochdale and in his first season back in the North West played in a League Cup Final against Norwich for ‘Dale.

He retired in 1964 and continued to live in Burnley, working for many years as a coal merchant. He leaves his wife Elizabeth, daughters Kay and Laura, and grandchildren Adam, Ben and Rebecca.

Our thoughts are with them all at this sad time.
