Dean to deliver his cards

Last updated : 14 September 2007 By Tony Scholes
Select Group referee Mike Dean from the Wirral must spend most of each week filling in reports just now given the number of times he hands out both yellow and red cards. He got off to a quiet start this season with only three yellow cards in the Derby v Portsmouth game.

He's more than made up for it since. In just five games this season he's already taken his card count to an amazing 34 yellow and four red. If you add his last two games of last season he's now hit a staggering 51 yellow and six red in his last seven games. Eleven times in his last fourteen games he's handed out red cards.

It really is a staggering number of cards. By the end of last season, in just 43 games, he'd given out 173 yellow and sixteen red cards and it does look as though he has set off with the intention of beating that record this season.

He isn't though a referee to lean particularly towards the away team. So far this season eighteen of his yellow cards have gone to home players and sixteen to away players. Of his red cards, Reading's Kalifa Cisse was sent off in their 2-1 home defeat against Chelsea and Robbie Elliott, now with Hartlepool, was sent off in their 2-1 home win over Doncaster.

In his last game he sent off one from each side, Blackburn's Tugay and Richard Dunne of Manchester City in a game the home side won 1-0 at Ewood Park. So that's three of his red cards have gone to home players.

To be honest, he's never caused us too many problems, although he had something of a poor game two seasons ago when we played Leeds at home. He also certainly upset Uncle Fester at Bradford City back in 2002 when he sent off two home players on an afternoon when the home manager felt Dimitrios Papadopoulos was falling over a little bit too easily.

Whatever sort of performance we get from him tomorrow, we cannot expect it to be card free, although he does occasionally not bother. His last card free game was in December last year.

He'll be assisted by Christopher Sarginson (Staffordshire) and Mick McDonough (Tyne & Wear) and the fourth official will be Karl Evans (Greater Manchester) who is in his first year as a Football League referee.
